“Colored paver moulds” (彩θ²θ·―ι’η / cai zhuan) cover a surprisingly wide family: everything from hollow units that grow grass, through municipal accessibility tiles, to decorative tiles embossed with flowers and leaves. Buyers run into trouble when they treat them as one product. This guide separates the families and lists the points that actually decide whether a paving job succeeds.
1. The five paver families in this range
- Permeable / grass-grid pavers. Hollow units with through planting holes. Our range has hexagonal units (outer 12.5 and 13.5 cm, inner holes 5 and 5.5 cm) and a large 48 Γ 24 Γ 8 cm serrated slab with two circular through holes. Holes are filled with soil and seed (or gravel) after laying.
- Tactile pavers. Accessibility tiles for visually impaired pedestrians: blister (raised dot) warning tiles and strip (directional) tiles, in 20 Γ 20 Γ 6 cm and 25 Γ 25 Γ 5 cm, normally bright yellow.
- Shaped / interlocking pavers. Diamond, bow, arrow, clover, crescent, tooth and serrated shapes that interlock or build landscape patterns, plus combination sets.
- Square & interlocking workhorses. 18β30 cm square colored pavers (including 2β3 cm thin overlays), I/H-shaped interlockers and anti-slip grid-face tiles β the volume sellers for sidewalks and community roads.
- Patterned decorative tiles. Embossed faces β maple leaf, plum blossom, chrysanthemum, diamond, Spanish, nine-grid and double-fan β plus small 12.5 cm hexagons, for courtyards, parks and scenic paving.
2. Solid vs hollow β the first question to answer
Most “colored pavers” are solid tiles that simply pave. Only the permeable hexagons and the holed 48 cm slab in this range are hollow: their through holes exist to drain stormwater and grow grass (sponge-city / green-parking applications). A common mistake is buying shaped decorative tiles that look lacy and assuming they will drain β clover and crescent shapes are solid; check for actual through holes before specifying a permeable pavement.
3. Grass-grid pavers fail on sub-base, not on the tile
A hollow grass paver carries light vehicle loads only when the system is built correctly: open-graded crushed-stone sub-base (free-draining), compacted and level, geotextile separation where specified, holes filled with a soil/gravel mix suited to the seed. Poured onto a flat sand bed with no drainage, the grass dies in weeks and the slab cracks under tyres. The mould is the easy part β the base design is what buyers forget.
4. Thickness means duty
- 2β3 cm: overlay/veneer tiles bonded onto sound existing pavement β not structural.
- 4β5 cm: foot traffic β sidewalks, plazas, courtyards.
- 6 cm: community roads and light vehicle areas, especially interlocking shapes.
- 8 cm: occasional vehicle loads (serrated/drainage slabs, thick interlockers).
Interlocking I/H and tooth shapes outperform plain squares on vehicles because the joints transfer load across the pavement β that is why driveway specifications call for interlockers, not large plain slabs.
5. Patterns are laid, not just cast
Four-piece motifs (plum blossom, chrysanthemum) need four tiles per complete flower: order in multiples of four, and decide the laying direction before work starts. Continuous patterns (Spanish, double-fan) likewise need a direction plan and consistent pouring orientation. Sort this out at the layout stage β rotating a quarter-tile after the concrete has set means cutting out finished pavers.
6. Color is made in the mix
Colored pavers get their color from iron-oxide pigment mixed into the concrete (typically 2β5% of cement weight by color depth). For thick tiles a pigmented wear-course layer poured first, then plain base concrete, gives the same surface color at lower pigment cost. White cement is used for bright pastels; grey cement for deep reds, yellows and greens. PP and ABS mould faces don't react with oxide pigments and release cleanly, so the color stays even tile to tile.
7. Tactile tiles are a compliance item, not decoration
Blister dots = stop/hazard/turn warning; long strips = safe directional line. Municipal sidewalks, stations, hospitals and public buildings require them, usually in attention-grabbing yellow. If a project includes public-access paving, the tactile tiles should be in the same mould order as the running pavers so heights and batch color match.
8. Cavities, materials and output
“1-out-N” is the number of tiles per pour β a 1-out-9 mould makes nine rough-stone tiles in one cycle, cutting cost and labour per tile on volume runs. PP is the default (150+ cycles, flexible demoulding); ABS is chosen for deep crisp motifs and fine textures that must stay sharp. Compare quotes per finished tile and per daily output, not per mould.
Build a balanced first order
If you are importing paver block moulds for the first time, a mixed-SKU order is usually safer than committing to one pattern. A practical mix pairs a few high-volume workhorses β 25β30 cm square/interlocking colored pavers and I/H-shaped interlockers for sidewalks β with a smaller set of decorative shapes (maple leaf, crescent, four-piece flower motifs) and one or two permeable grass-grid or tactile items to win municipal and parking jobs. This lets you test which shapes your local market actually buys before reordering in volume; mixed-SKU packing is standard and there is no strict MOQ per design.

What is the difference between a colored paver and a grass/permeable paver?
A colored paver (cai zhuan) is a solid decorative or interlocking concrete tile. A grass/permeable paver is hollow, with through holes that are filled with soil and grass (or gravel) after laying, so the surface stays green while carrying light traffic. They are used for parking bays, fire access lanes and sponge-city drainage projects. In our range the hexagonal units (outer 12.5/13.5 cm with 5/5.5 cm inner holes) and the 48x24x8 cm serrated slab with two through holes are hollow; the shaped and patterned pavers are solid.
How is the color in colored concrete pavers made?
Iron-oxide pigment is mixed into the concrete before pouring, or a thin pigmented wear-course layer is poured first and the base concrete added after (this saves pigment on thick tiles). White cement gives brighter pastel tones; grey cement with pigment gives deeper reds, yellows and greens. Smooth PP/ABS faces release cleanly so color stays even. Pigment dose is typically 2-5% of cement weight by color depth.
How do I read dimensions like 25 x 25 x 5 cm or outer 12.5 / inner 5 cm?
Solid pavers: length x width x thickness in centimetres. Hollow hexagons: the outer number is the hexagon overall size (opposite-flat distance) and the inner number is the planting/drainage hole. Thin 2-3 cm units are overlay/veneer pavers for resurfacing sound old pavement, not structural slabs for vehicle loads.
Which pavers can carry cars, and which are only for foot traffic?
Driveways and fire lanes: hollow grass-grid units on an open-graded compacted sub-base, or thick (6-8 cm) interlocking I/H-shaped and tooth/serrated pavers whose joints transfer load. Footways, plazas and courtyards: the decorative shaped and patterned pavers (clover, crescent, bow, diamond, maple leaf, flower motifs). Rule of thumb on thickness: 4-5 cm foot traffic, 6 cm community roads, 8 cm occasional vehicles. Never pave a driveway with 2-3 cm veneer tiles.
How do four-piece flower patterns work when ordering?
Patterns like plum blossom and chrysanthemum are quartered: each tile carries one quarter of the motif and four tiles laid together form one complete flower. Order in multiples of four tiles per full motif, fix the laying direction before paving starts, and pour consistently so the pattern direction matches. Spanish-style and double-fan patterns are continuous and likewise need a direction plan.
What are tactile pavers and when are they required?
Tactile (blister/strip) pavers guide visually impaired pedestrians: raised dots (blister/warning tiles) mark hazards, bus stops and turns; long strips (directional tiles) mark the safe walking line. They are mandatory on municipal sidewalks, stations, hospitals and public buildings, usually in bright yellow. We supply both types in 20x20x6 cm and 25x25x5 cm in PP.
What does 1-out-2 or 1-out-9 mean, and why does it matter for price?
It is the number of finished tiles one mould casts per pour. A 1-out-9 rough-stone mould makes nine 10x10 cm tiles in one cycle. More cavities mean a larger mould but much lower cost and labour per tile. Compare quotes per finished tile and per daily output, not per mould.
Should paver moulds be PP or ABS?
PP (polypropylene) is the default for high-volume plain and interlocking pavers - it flexes under vibration and demoulding and reaches 150+ pour cycles. ABS is chosen where deep crisp patterns, sharp arrises or fine textures (rough-stone faces, fine anti-slip grooves, deep flower motifs) must stay sharp over hundreds of cycles. Send the pattern and expected volume and we will recommend the grade.
